Benefits of Cycling

Life is good and life + cycling is better!

Hooray!
Hooray!

I’ve only been cycling for 6 months and the health benefits I’ve experienced were completely unexpected.

So far… 1. I’m off insulin! I am Type 2 diabetic. I used to take 85 units per day. 2. I take half the amount of blood pressure medication I used to take. 3. I take half the amount of medication to regulate my heart rhythm, (I have premature ventricular contractions). 4. I no longer take muscle relaxants before bedtime; (back spasms kept me from sleeping well), not anymore! 5. I only take 25% of the medications I used to take to control acid reflux.

My pain level has decreased so much there are actually days where I don’t have to take Tylenol and Advil.

AND… I’ve lost 35 pounds! I prefer to say, “I’ve gained 35 pounds of my health back”!

Whenever I have leg pain or a headache I jump on my bicycle and go for a ride.  Cycling is the best prescription ever!!!

In the Beginning

I love my Townie. It is a wonderfully comfortable cruiser. I sit up straight and have no pressure on my arms, hands, & wrists.

It also can be decked out with a basket, bell, mirror, bike bling, and too much other fun stuff to mention. Google “Townie Accessories” and see what is available.

Love to Cycle
Love to Cycle

I chose cycling because I remembered how good it felt when I was a kid. It is refreshing, even on hot days. I call it a self-generating breeze. Believe it or not, it works!

As I said in my previous post I needed to get physically active. That tuchus of mine was not getting any smaller and my health had not been good for a long time.

Going to a gym or “fitness center” was not in my future. In the past I simply paid monthly for the privilege of not working out. However, my wallet got a great work out! I’m not saying it’s bad, I’m saying it didn’t work for me.

Bicycling works because I love the way I feel when I’m riding. It also works because I invited friends and family to ride with me. It’s nice to have company while you are tootling down the trails.

Grab a bike, call a friend, and go for a ride! Oh, and bring a bottle of water.

My New Bicycle

In February 2014 I purchased my Electra Townie from Bike Tech in Olympia, WA. I didn’t know I was going to fall in love with cycling.

It started in November of 2013 when I decided I needed to be physically active. NOTE: I didn’t say “more physically active”. I was living a very sedentary lifestyle and I needed to get up off my tuchus! Tuchus = cute Jewish word for butt.

My very first ride was only about 15 minutes. I think my second ride wasn’t much longer. But it didn’t take too long and I was all over the trails in Thurston County.
